Overview
DDGS (Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles) is a nutrient-dense, mid-protein by-product of the dry-mill ethanol industry, most commonly derived from maize (corn). During ethanol production the starch in the grain is fermented into alcohol, leaving a concentrated mix of protein, fat, fibre, and minerals. Because the starch is removed, the remaining nutrients are concentrated by nearly three times, making DDGS a highly valued 'dual-purpose' ingredient that provides both protein and energy.
Applications
- Cost-effective protein source — 26%–30% crude protein; an excellent, lower-cost alternative to expensive soybean meal.
- High energy contribution — remains highly energetic (roughly equal to maize) thanks to 6%–11% residual crude fat.
- Yeast biomass benefits — residual Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast provides beta-glucans and B-vitamins that stimulate gut immunity and enhance palatability.
- Phosphorus availability — fermentation makes phosphorus highly digestible for monogastric animals like pigs and chickens.
Nutritional Profile
| crudeProtein | 26%–30% — a lower-cost alternative to soybean meal |

| crudeFat | 6%–11% (conventional); 4%–7% for low-fat variants |

| energy | Roughly equal to maize despite the starch removal |

| phosphorus | Highly digestible — fermentation unlocks phytate-bound phosphorus |

Limitations & Usage Tips
- Flowability and caking — notorious for caking into solid blocks in silos and bulk trucks; requires steep cones, bin vibrators, or chain drag unloaders.
- Pellet quality — high fat and low starch act as a die lubricant, weakening pellet binding and giving soft, crumbly pellets (low PDI) above 10% inclusion.
- Colour tracking — golden-yellow indicates gentle drying; dark brown or black indicates heat damage (Maillard reaction) that destroys lysine digestibility.
Recommended Inclusion Rates
| Ruminants (beef & dairy cattle) | 20%–40% — rumen-bypass protein boosts milk and growth |
|---|
| Swine (pigs) | 10%–25% — high fat can cause soft pork; step down before slaughter |
|---|
| Poultry (broilers & layers) | 5%–15% — limited by amino acid variability and manure moisture |

Quality control & receiving checklist
- Mycotoxin concentration — mycotoxins are not destroyed by fermentation, so their concentration triples (3×) versus the original corn. Strictly screen for Aflatoxin, DON/Vomitoxin, and Fumonisin.
- Moisture content — high moisture with residual fat risks heating, mould, and spontaneous combustion. Target: strictly below 11.5%–12.0%.
- Crude fat — modern plants often skim corn oil ("low-fat" DDGS). Conventional > 9% fat; low-fat ranges 4%–7%.
- Solubles content — the dried-grains-to-solubles ratio affects stickiness and consistency. Target: uniform golden colour, free of dark, burnt clumps.
