Overview

Soybean Meal is the world's most widely used protein source in poultry feed, primarily due to its exceptional amino acid profile and high digestibility. It serves as the nutritional 'gold standard' for vegetable proteins in broiler and layer diets.

Nutritional Profile

crudeProtein44–48.5% (depending on whether hulls are removed during processing)
aminoAcidBalanceExceptionally rich in lysine (crucial for muscle growth), threonine, and tryptophan
limitingAminoAcidsNaturally low in sulfur amino acids — methionine and cysteine. Diets are almost always supplemented with synthetic methionine to balance.
metabolizableEnergyApproximately 2,200–2,500 kcal/kg

Anti-Nutritional Factors

  • Trypsin inhibitors — block protein-digesting enzymes; cause poor growth and pancreatic issues. Neutralised by proper toasting.
  • Oligosaccharides (raffinose, stachyose) — indigestible for poultry; cause digestive upset or wet litter.
  • Phytate — binds phosphorus and other minerals; broken down by added phytase enzymes.

Recommended Inclusion Rates

Broilers25%–40% of total diet
Layers20%–25% (supports egg weight & production)
CoverageTypically 80% of total dietary amino acids in corn-soy formulations
